Thread: Language translation and encoding

    Default Language translation and encoding

    Hi.

I have problems with character encoding. I translated language file to Croatian (not yet everything), and saved file as user_hrvatski. Component recognized new language file, but does not recognise Croatian letters. My site encodes all pages to UTF-8, wich should work. I also tried to change encoding of linx.html.php page, but it's still not working.

Do you know how to solve that problem?

    Thanks.

P.S. update: I partialy solved the problem right now by replacing croatian letters with charachter codes. Ie. I use ž for ž. It works fine, but not practical when you have to replace. If theres no other way, I'll continue to translate this way.

There are 2 things in your post:

linx.html.php is not a file in our product. Its a different product called LinX whose package has linx.html.php

Anyway, in JV-LE, have you saved the language file in UTF-8 WITHOUT BOM?

    Thanks

You are the Man! Thank you! And thanx for quick response.

About linx.html.php - my mistake, I ment jvlinx.html.php. I installed linx before your script, but was not satisfied. Somebody on Joomla Extensions recomended your extension, and he was right.

I did alredy try to change encoding of the language file, but was not able to do that with Dreamweaver. You can enter propertis of the page, only if you put mouse inside of html code, not php code, and there is only php coding in langugage file. I solve the problem simply by editing the file with Notepad.

Thanx again. If you want, I'll send you croatian language file when I finish it.

Notepad doesn't have an option to save as UTF without a BOM. You might have to use babelpad or phpdesigner or any UTF-8 compatible editor.

If you have dont have one, you may please send the existing file to us and we will use either of the above software to do it and return it back to you. After that, you may confirm if things are displaying properly.

    Thanks

Thank you very much for your support. However, as I wrote, I did solve the problem with Notepad. You just go to File/Save As and on the bottom there are encoding options. There's no option for with, or without boom, just UTF-8, but works just fine.

Anyway, I don't know are you interested in, but your script is producing about hundered, or more HTML errors in the front end. Some of them are not critical (like forgeting to close input and br tags with backslash), but there are doesnts of "orphan" tags, like closing divs and A tags, without opening them. I use FF, but in some browsers your layout could fall apart.

If you use FF, I recomend "HTML validator" extension, wich places small icons at the bottom of the Browser window. It tells you are there any HTML errors on the page you load. And when you go to View/Source code, then it points exactly where you made a mistake in your HTML coding. Great tool for debuging HTML. After hour, or two, I managed to clean jvlinx.html.php to zero errors.

Temporarily, you can switch off error reporting to None in Global Configuration. But jvlinx.php already has this turned off. So its a little surprising!

Anway, we are already in the making of JV-LE 2.0 for Joomla 1.5 native mode, which will address HTML and CSS validation issues.

    Thanks
